Lift Ev'ry Voice
Join the Ritz Chamber Players this February for Lift Ev'ry Voice, a powerful concert celebrating Black History Month and the 125th anniversary of the Black National Anthem, Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing.
Originally written as a poem by Jacksonville's own James Weldon Johnson, a civil rights activist and NAACP leader, and later set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson, this iconic hymn has become a symbol of resilience, hope, and unity.
First performed on February 12, 1900, by 500 students at Jacksonville's Edwin M. Stanton School, the song has since inspired generations and served as a beacon during the Civil Rights Movement. This concert will honor its legacy and the Johnson brothers’ profound contributions to music and history.
